Celeste was sitting in the Maize Hall lounge, reading The Beauty Myth for Intro to Feminist Thought, when suddenly someone covered her eyes from behind.
“Guess who, dude?” a voice asked.
“Ali?”
Sure enough, Ali climbed over the back of the battered couch and flopped down next to Celeste.
“Hey, dude,” Ali said with a sigh.
“Hey, dude,” Celeste said back. She had never thought she would get used to Ali's dude thing, but she was.
Ali was usually bursting with energy, but now she was slumped so far down in the couch, she was becoming one with the cushions. “What's wrong?” Celeste asked, putting her book down between them.
“I just met with Dean Redding,” Ali said.
“Why?” Celeste asked.
“I guess I've sort of . fallen behind in a few classes,” Ali said, flicking her eyes toward Celeste, then looking down again. “She gave me a talking-to, if you know what I mean.”
“That's terrible,” Celeste said. “But it doesn't sound too bad, right? They probably just wanted to see if everything was okay. They're touchy-feely like that around here.”
“Actually, she said that if I don't get my act together soon, I'll be taking it on the road,” Ali said, picking at her fingernails.
“You mean leave PU?” Celeste asked, her heart dropping. It had never occurred to her that one of them would leave.
“Sucks, huh?” Ali said with a wry smile. “And I was doing so well with the AHUL.”
“Fuck the AHUL,” Celeste said.
This time Ali smiled for real. “Did Celeste Alexander just say the word fuck?”
“You bet your ass I did,” Celeste said, sitting up straight. Ali laughed and sat up herself. “I am not going to let you flunk out of school,” Celeste added firmly.
“Oh, really?” Ali asked, raising her eyebrows.
“Yes, really,” Celeste told her. “I'll help you.”
“What do you want to help a fuckup like me for?” Ali asked.
“You're not a fuckup. You just fucked up,” Celeste said. She kind of liked this f-word thing. She should use it more often. “Now, what's your worst class?”
“Intro to Feminist Thought,” Ali said. “I don't even have the books.”
“I didn't know you were taking that. So am I. Well, that makes it easy. Here,” Celeste said, picking up The Beauty Myth and handing it to Ali. “I'm ahead in the reading. Just borrow my books.”
“Seriously?” Ali asked.
“Of course!” Celeste said. “And trust me, once you start reading that, you will not be able to put it down. That book is some seriously messed-up shit.”
Ali laughed again. “You're starting to talk like me.”
“And you're going to start studying like me,” Celeste said.
Ali flipped through the first few pages of the book and looked up at Celeste, her eyes bright with gratitude.
“Thanks, C.,” she said. She reached over and threw her arms around Celeste's neck. Celeste hugged her back.
“No problem,” she said. “Don't worry. You're not going anywhere.”
“I hope not,” Ali said. But she didn't sound convinced.
